This is Canadian Pacific Investments, not the railway. CPI was CP’s non-rail holding company, incorporated in 1962 and reporting from Montreal. The 1979 report said it held Cominco and Fording Coal. Fording was formed in 1968 to develop Elkford, B.C., coal.
Through Cominco and Fording, CPI was a major Canadian zinc-lead and metallurgical-coal owner, separate from the trains.
Why it mattered
CPI was how the CPR conglomerate held mines, coal, oil and property separately from the railway. Through Cominco and Fording it was a major Canadian zinc-lead and metallurgical-coal owner.
Now
CPI was renamed Canadian Pacific Enterprises in 1980 and merged into Canadian Pacific Limited in 1985. CP sold its Cominco control block in 1986. In 2001 CP Limited split into five public companies, including the railway, Fording Coal, and PanCanadian Energy. Teck later bought Fording.
Still open
- Whether any CPI legal shell survived after the 1985 merger into CP Limited was not pursued beyond the merger itself.
