Consolidated Paper

Consolidated Paper sold newsprint, kraft paper and boxboard from offices in the Sun Life Building, Montreal. It was incorporated in 1931 from the old Canada Power & Paper mills on the St. Maurice, including Laurentide at Grand-Mère and Belgo at Shawinigan. In 1967 it took in Bathurst Paper and became Consolidated-Bathurst.

It was a major Quebec newsprint and packaging producer, later with a mill at Bathurst, New Brunswick.

Why it mattered

It was a major Quebec newsprint and packaging producer, with mills on the St. Maurice and, after 1967, Bathurst, New Brunswick. Power Corporation later held the company. Combined with Bathurst it was one of Canada's larger pulp-and-paper groups before the 1989 sale.

Now

Stone Container of Chicago bought Consolidated-Bathurst in 1989 and ran the Canadian newsprint business as Stone-Consolidated. That company merged with Abitibi-Price in 1997. The newsprint name line now sits under Domtar. Packaging went the Smurfit-Stone route.
