Falconbridge mined and smelted nickel-copper in the Sudbury Basin. Founded in 1928, it ran mines at Falconbridge, East, Strathcona, Onaping and Lockerby, a smelter at Falconbridge (1930), and a second hub at Strathcona (1968).
It was Sudbury’s other integrated nickel house beside Inco. The town, the smelter, and later Strathcona supported a second mining payroll in the basin.

Now
Noranda amalgamated with Falconbridge in 2005. Xstrata took control in 2006. Glencore merged with Xstrata in 2013. Sudbury mines, the Strathcona mill and the smelter still run as Glencore’s Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations.
