Hawker Siddeley Canada

Hawker Siddeley Canada was the Canadian company of the British Hawker Siddeley group. A.V. Roe Canada took the name in 1962. In the mid-1960s its holdings included Dominion Steel and Coal (Cape Breton coal and the Sydney mill) plus rail-car and other heavy plants. Head office was at 7 King Street East, Toronto.

Through Dosco it controlled a large share of Cape Breton coal and the Sydney steelworks, a major Maritime employer.

Why it mattered

The Canadian company also built rail equipment and held other heavy-industry plants, so it sat in steel, coal, shipyard and transport manufacturing rather than only aerospace.

Now

Hawker Siddeley announced the Sydney mill would close in 1967. Nova Scotia took the mill as SYSCO; Ottawa took the coal mines as DEVCO. The leftover company sold its remaining plants and, in 2001, was bought as a remnant holding company by Glacier Ventures.
