Hudson’s Bay Oil and Gas was a Calgary explorer and producer, not the Hudson’s Bay store. It was incorporated in 1926 and took the HBOG name in 1929. It produced in Alberta fields including Pembina and Kaybob.
It held a large Canadian land position and was a major Calgary producer, separate from HBC retail.
Why it mattered
HBOG produced oil and gas in Alberta fields including Pembina and Kaybob and held a large Canadian land position that Dome cited when the two were combined. It was a major Calgary producer, separate from HBC retail.
Now
Dome bought Conoco’s controlling interest in 1981 and amalgamated HBOG in March 1982. The assets went with Dome to Amoco Canada in 1988.
Still open
- University of Alberta cataloguing gives 31 December 1984 as a later Dome-subsidiary acquisition date; contemporaneous UPI and Canadian Encyclopedia treat control (1981) and amalgamation (10 March 1982) as the end of HBOG as an independent company.
- Rankings such as “third-largest Canadian oil producer” appear in secondary summaries and were not used.
- Not the Hudson’s Bay Company retail chain.
