Ranger Oil was a Calgary explorer and producer, named Ranger in 1958 after earlier Maygill companies. It developed Western Canadian oil and gas and later worked the North Sea and other foreign fields.
It was a Calgary independent that used a western Canadian base to operate abroad.
Why it mattered
It was a Calgary-based independent that developed Western Canadian oil and gas and later used that base to operate abroad, especially in the North Sea.
Now
Canadian Natural Resources bought Ranger in 2000. This is not the later U.S. Ranger Oil that Baytex bought in 2023.
Still open
- Exact Maygill incorporation day (often given as 21 August 1950) was not confirmed from a primary filing; 1950 founding is supported by the Globe and Mail (2000: “founded 50 years ago”) and the U of A name history.
- Headline deal values differ ($1.04 billion in the Globe and Mail; $1.6 billion Canadian in Oil & Gas Journal, which may include assumed debt). The $8.25 cash-per-share term is in both.
- CNRL’s 2000 Annual Information Form (cited in search indexes as July 2000 close and 1 October 2000 amalgamation) was not retrieved as a live PDF.
