Trans-Canada Pipe Lines was formed in 1951 to build the first natural-gas line from Alberta to central Canada. The Canadian Mainline was finished by October 1958. In 1971 the company was coating 42-inch pipe in western Manitoba.
The mainline was the first gas link from western fields to Ontario and Quebec. The 1956 pipeline debate in Parliament used closure to pass the enabling bill.
Why it mattered
The mainline was the first gas link from western producing fields to Ontario and Quebec markets. Trade minister C.D. Howe treated the project as comparable in national importance to the Canadian Pacific Railway; Parliament’s 1956 pipeline debate used closure to pass enabling legislation.
Now
TransCanada merged with NOVA’s pipeline business in 1998. The parent took the name TC Energy in May 2019. It still operates from Calgary.
Still open
- The 2019 rename was of the 2003 parent, TransCanada Corporation, not a winding-up of TransCanada PipeLines Limited, which continued as a subsidiary.
- Exact date of the Corporations Canada certificate of amendment after the 3 May 2019 shareholder vote was not separately retrieved.
