Campbell Red Lake Mines mined gold underground at Balmertown, east of Red Lake, Ontario. George and Colin Campbell restaked the ground in 1944. The mill started in 1949. Dome Mines took control. By 1980 the main shaft was more than 1,300 metres deep.

It was the largest historic gold producer in the Red Lake camp. The mine poured its ten-millionth ounce in 2000 and supported the town of Balmertown.

Why it mattered

It was the largest historic gold producer in the Red Lake camp. The Red Lake Regional Heritage Centre puts output at 11,216,443 ounces from 1949 to 2006, and the mine poured its ten-millionth ounce in 2000. The payroll built Balmertown.

Now

In 1987 Campbell amalgamated with Dome Mines and Placer Development as Placer Dome. Barrick bought Placer Dome in 2006 and sold Campbell to Goldcorp that May. Newmont took Goldcorp in 2019 and sold the Red Lake complex to Evolution Mining on 31 March 2020. Evolution still mines there.

  • Whether the legal Campbell Red Lake Mines Limited shell survived after the 1987 amalgamation as a separate filing entity is not material; the mine lineage is the one followed here.
