Canadian Occidental Petroleum, CanOxy, produced oil, gas, sulphur, and chemicals from Calgary. It was formed in 1971 when Occidental combined Jefferson Lake Petrochemicals of Canada with other Canadian oil, gas, and chemical holdings.

It was a large Calgary producer with a U.S. parent that later became a Canadian-headquartered independent under the Nexen name.

Why it mattered

It was a large Calgary oil, gas, and chemical company with U.S. parentage that later became a Canadian-headquartered independent (Nexen). The 2013 sale was then the largest Chinese purchase of a Canadian energy company.

Now

The company became Nexen Inc. around 2000 after Occidental sold down its stake. CNOOC Limited closed its purchase on 25 February 2013. The legal name became CNOOC Petroleum North America ULC on 31 December 2018. That Calgary company still holds the North American assets.
