Crown Zellerbach Canada was the B.C. forest-products arm of San Francisco’s Crown Zellerbach. Pacific Mills took the name in 1954. It held coastal timber, sawmills and the Elk Falls mill at Campbell River, and barged logs to the plants, including a loader at Goliath Bay on Jervis Inlet.
The Canadian operations were a large Crown Zellerbach holding outside the United States and a major coastal employer.
Why it mattered
It held large B.C. coastal timber, sawmills and the Elk Falls pulp and paper mill, moving logs by barge to coastal plants. The Canadian operations were a major Crown Zellerbach holding outside the United States.
Now
Fletcher Challenge of New Zealand bought the company in 1983 and renamed it Crown Forest. The paper side later became NorskeCanada, then Catalyst. Paper Excellence bought Catalyst in 2019. That group now operates as Domtar.
Still open
- Some secondary accounts say Fletcher Challenge bought Crown Zellerbach Canada in 1981; contemporary UPI/NYT and a B.C. TFL history put the deal in 1982–83 (close 30 March 1983).
- McGill lists a 1970 B.C. incorporation; Bancroft/OAC and Coquitlam Archives treat 1954 as the Crown Zellerbach Canada start (Pacific Mills rename).
- Which former CZ Canada sawmills versus Elk Falls paper assets stayed in the Catalyst/Domtar line versus TimberWest or others was not fully traced.
