Clifton Sherman founded Dominion Steel Castings in Hamilton in 1912. It became Dominion Foundries and Steel, then Dofasco. The Hamilton works was a fully integrated mill, with basic oxygen steelmaking from October 1954, and rolling and coating lines for auto, construction and packaging steel.
In the late 1970s it was Canada’s second-largest fully integrated steel producer. Ore came from Newfoundland and Quebec.
Why it mattered
Dofasco was Canada's second-largest fully integrated steel producer in the late 1970s, with its principal mills and head office in Hamilton. It supplied flat-rolled steel to Canadian and U.S. auto, construction and packaging customers and drew ore from Newfoundland and Quebec.
Now
Arcelor bought Dofasco in February 2006. Mittal later acquired Arcelor. The Hamilton mill still operates as ArcelorMittal Dofasco.
