Winnipeg Hydro

Winnipeg Hydro was the city’s utility for electricity, steam heat and street lighting. It built Pointe du Bois on the Winnipeg River, first unit in 1911, and Slave Falls downstream, first unit in 1931.

The city built its own plants so it would not depend on private power. Pointe du Bois is still running, and is Manitoba Hydro’s oldest station.

Now

Manitoba Hydro bought Winnipeg Hydro from the city in 2002. After that it was the sole electricity supplier in the province. Both river plants remain in the Manitoba Hydro fleet.
