Canadian National

Canadian National was the federal Crown railway, assembled after the First World War from the Canadian Northern, Intercolonial, Grand Trunk and other lines. The reports cover the railway plus telecommunications, hotels and trucking. In 1937 CN organized Trans-Canada Air Lines.

It was the government answer to bankrupt transcontinentals and the railway that connected the Atlantic and the Pacific.

Why it mattered

CN was the government answer to bankrupt transcontinentals after the First World War and the only railway connecting the Atlantic, Pacific, and (after later U.S. purchases) the Gulf of Mexico. It hauled freight and, for decades, passengers, mail, and hotel guests across the country.

Now

CN was privatized in 1995 and listed in Toronto and New York. Headquarters must remain in Montreal. It still operates as Canadian National Railway Company.
