Stelco

The Steel Company of Canada was formed in 1910 by merging Ontario and Quebec iron and steel firms. It made flat-rolled and coated steels, bars, rods, wire, pipe and fasteners at Hamilton, and later at Nanticoke on Lake Erie. The legal name Stelco was adopted in 1980.

It was Canada’s largest steelmaker. The 1980 report said it made about 35 percent of the nation’s steel, for cars, construction, and pipe.

Why it mattered

Stelco supplied a large share of Canadian steel for domestic manufacturing, construction, automotive, and pipe and tube uses, and was based in Hamilton. The 1980 annual report stated it produced approximately 35% of the nation's steel. Hamilton and Nanticoke remained the core Canadian plants through later ownership changes.

Now

U.S. Steel bought Stelco in 2007 and renamed it U.S. Steel Canada. Hamilton steelmaking ended in 2013. After creditor protection, Bedrock took the company out in 2017 under the Stelco name again. Cleveland-Cliffs bought Stelco Holdings on 1 November 2024. Steel still comes out of Hamilton and Nanticoke under the Stelco name.
