Canada Southern Petroleum was a Calgary explorer, incorporated in 1954. It held frontier permits rather than refineries. In 1957 it took Yukon permit 1007, later the Kotaneelee gas field, and it held interests in the Arctic Islands' Sverdrup Basin.

Kotaneelee was a rare producing gas field in the Yukon. The company was a long-running private holder of northern Canadian gas rights.

Now

Canadian Oil Sands Trust bought the company in 2006 after a bidding contest with Petro-Canada. An amalgamation followed that September. Suncor Energy bought Canadian Oil Sands on 21 March 2016. Canada Southern is no longer a public company.

  • Whether Kotaneelee or Arctic-island interests still sit inside Suncor, or were sold as COS said it intended for the conventional gas, is not traced here.
