The company
Canada Southern Petroleum was a Calgary explorer, incorporated in 1954. It held frontier permits rather than refineries. In 1957 it took Yukon permit 1007, later the Kotaneelee gas field, and it held interests in the Arctic Islands' Sverdrup Basin.

The Bent Horn F-72A extension well on Cameron Island flowed oil at an average of 5,300 barrels per day, and at short period rates of 30,000 barrels per day. Imperial Oil, Gulf Canada, Panarctic and PetroCanada undertook to spend upwards of $80 million on Arctic Islands exploration.
