The company
Canada Southern Petroleum was a Calgary explorer, incorporated in 1954. It held frontier permits rather than refineries. In 1957 it took Yukon permit 1007, later the Kotaneelee gas field, and it held interests in the Arctic Islands' Sverdrup Basin.

That year
Kotaneelee was hoped to come on stream early in 1982 at a planned 36 million cubic feet per day. After the operator recouped development expenses, Canada Southern would take 30 percent of the field's net profits.
