The company
Canada Southern Petroleum was a Calgary explorer, incorporated in 1954. It held frontier permits rather than refineries. In 1957 it took Yukon permit 1007, later the Kotaneelee gas field, and it held interests in the Arctic Islands' Sverdrup Basin.

That year
On August 6 Columbia Gas completed production testing of Kotaneelee well YT I-48, which flowed at a stabilized 50 million cubic feet per day. Absolute open flow was calculated at 459 million cubic feet per day.
